The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Basic course is a program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. It is designed to give members of the general public the skills required to assist someone who is developing a mental health problem or is in a mental health crisis. This course is a 12 hour program, appropriate to all members of our community and the minimum age of participants is 18.
Just like in physical first aid (ie.CPR), the mental health first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis is resolved. This is a basic introductory course aimed at increasing mental health literacy, decreasing the stigma associated with this topic and building the confidence of participants to be able to support people with mental health problems.
The MHFA Basic course addresses the following four of the most common mental health disorders including signs and symptoms, and crisis first aid for specific situations.
