History and Applications of Mindfulness

Facilitator: Sarah Kinsley

In this course, the history of mindfulness as a universal practice of cultivating awareness will be explored from the lens of various ancient wisdom traditions including the story of the Buddha and the spread of Buddhism. Learners will trace the history of mindfulness in the West, from the early European intellectual connection to the development of present-day applications. Students will explore the progression of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) from mental health care and medical settings to educational and business settings. Core mindfulness-based practices will be explored, which can be incorporated into everyday life to increase well-being and help manage stress.

"We cannot know where we are going if we do not know where we have come from." Roy C. Owens

As the popularization of mindfulness continues in various contexts in both our personal and professional lives it is helpful to know the history of these practices and how they have sprouted up in the West over the last 50 years. By knowing where these practices come from we can acknowledge and honour traditions that have come before. This honouring helps one to avoid adding to the “McMindfulness” in the West today.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore the history of mindfulness from various traditions including Buddhism
  • Explore the spread of mindfulness in the west and its current applications in mental health care, medical settings, educational and business settings
  • Learn and practice various core mindfulness practices to be utilized at work and at home
  • Critique the rise of mindfulness in the West

Who should attend? Students interested in exploring the roots of mindfulness and meditation in various wisdom traditions across the world.
