Designing an Effective Performance Management System

An effective performance management process is one of the HR manager's most important challenges. Without valid performance feedback, neither employees nor the organization can reach their full potential. This course will help you reach that fine balance between maximizing performance and feedback that employees value. Through lecture and in-class exercises, this course will help you design and implement a performance management system that conforms to your organization's strategic HR requirements. Topics include: measurement validity, rating scale design, coaching/feedback, assessment against objectives, critical incidents and team-based performance appraisal.

Upon course completion participants will possess:

  • Current trends in performance management
  • The importance of measurement reliability and validity in performance feedback
  • A variety of performance rating scales and the pros and cons of each
  • How to reduce rating errors in performance management
  • How to incorporate critical incidents in performance measurement

  • Incorporate job analysis data to increase validity
  • Incorporate constructive and supportive feedback in performance management
  • Design an executive feedback system
  • Define critical performance areas correctly
  • Optimally balance measurement of behaviors and outcomes
  • An appreciation of multi-cultural and gender considerations in performance management
  • A blueprint for aligning performance management to the strategic HR goals of the organization
